Known
as the ‘green heart’ of Italy because of its luxurious
vegetation, Umbria is a region whose natural boundaries
merge into the lands surrounding it; in the north the
rolling hills of sand and marl seem to be a part of
Tuscany; to the east mountain tops and limestone heights
extend into the Marches and to the south-west volcanic
terraces cut out of many large valleys lead into Lazio.
Everywhere the region is marked by rolling hills
interspersed with small plains, narrow gorges and gentle
slopes. There are spectacular natural sights such as the
Marmara Falls cascading down in a display of awesome
beauty; the splendid Springs of Clitunno rising in fertile
Umbrian countryside. Lake Trasimeno, mirror calm with its
wooded islands, has the strategically important medieval
town and castle of Castiglion del Lago jutting out on a
peninsula on its western shores. The everchanging
character of the countryside is matched by an infinite
variety of artistic and historical sites; the famous
spiritual monuments of Assisi and Spello; the
architectural richness of thousand year old towns; the
ancient Etruscan City of Orvieto, high up on its outcrop
of tufo, with its beautiful Cathedral and remote traces of
Roman civilisation with theatres, temples, forums, mosaics
and country villas whose ancient charm lives on.
